Aims of the course and reasons to study this subject
This is a two-year GCSE course for beginners. Students will learn to speak and write in Russian and to understand the written and spoken language. It is suitable for anyone with an interest in extending their range of languages. Studying Russian opens up the possibility of studying other Slavonic and more 'exotic' languages at University or in the future. Familiarity with the language also offers an insight into the rich culture, history and society of this fascinating country.
Scheme of Assessment
Exam Board: Edexcel
The topics covered are the same as for other GCSE languages:
- Self, Family and Friends
- House, Home and Daily Routine
- Local Area

- Holidays
- School
- Work and Future Plans.
The subject is examined in a similar manner to other GCSE languages and each element carries 25% of the total mark.
- Listening Comprehension
- Reading Comprehension
- Writing Paper
- Speaking Test.
Russian appeals to linguists wishing to broaden their range of subjects. It is also attractive to scientists and mathematicians who enjoy the structural approach to learning a language, and all students enjoy learning something new and challenging. (The first 4-5 lessons are spent mainly learning to read and write!) In structure, it is most akin to German and Latin, but study of any European language at GCSE will provide a solid foundation. Most of all, you need to be enthusiastic and enjoy communicating.
Students wishing to take GCSE Russian need to achieve at least a grade B at GCSE in at least one modern European language, or Latin or Greek.
